Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the painting presented here is a splendid view of the Venetian lagoon. The scene opens with an intriguing glimpse of the body of water that ends where the urban landscape begins, barely sketched but clearly defined. In the foreground, we glimpse human figures: a couple walking toward an anchored boat, most likely intending to reach the opposite shore. Following them are what may be two other figures, likely having just descended a flight of steps, visible on the left side of the work. The painting, in the quintessential 19th-century vedutist style, masterfully depicts a cityscape so dear to the artist, who depicted it several times throughout his life. Artist Felix Ziem's connection to what is known as the Barbizon School is very clear when looking at the canvas. Painters who actively contributed to the name of this school, such as Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot (Paris, 1796 – 1875), Théodore Rousseau (Paris, 1812 – Barbizon, 1867), Jean-François Millet (Gréville-Hague, 1814 – Barbizon, 1875), Charles-François Daubigny (Paris, February 15, 1817 – Paris, February 19, 1878), and others, sought to elevate this pictorial genre by rediscovering the beauty of nature away from the city. Here, however, we find Felix Ziem, who, by contrast, immerses himself in the urban environment without neglecting the landscape teachings based on color and light. Here, the style becomes personal and free from technical constraints to express the artist's personality. The canvas, painted in plain air, depicts an everyday scene with soft, delicate colors through precise brushstrokes and a defined line. Light, an essential element, defines and sculpts the pictorial material. Zelix Ziem was a French painter born in Beaune (Côte d'Or) on February 25, 1821, and died in Paris on November 10, 1911. He studied at the Academy of Architecture and Fine Arts in Dijon. In 1841, he moved to Nice, where he began receiving numerous art commissions from the bourgeoisie. But his artistic breakthrough came in 1942 when he began his journey to Italy, where he had the opportunity to visit Rome, and later Venice, the city that would become his true source of inspiration. He visited it several times between 1845 and 1892. The city of Barbizon also played a key role in his artistic career, having gathered, between 1830 and 1870, the famous school of artists dedicated to the representation of landscape in its myriad technical and formal influences.
