Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
In this portrait, artist Ferdinando Piras demonstrates his ability to achieve a perfect naturalistic rendering with a highly sculptural technique. The extremely precise drawing captures every detail of the physiognomy, providing a highly detailed account of the face. Ferdinando Piras's extensive experience as a sculptor was crucial in attaining this excellent technique. This led him to treat both drawing and engraving as a material in relief, enhancing its plastic qualities. This is evident in this work, where Piras, with a nuanced touch, highlights the volumes, highlighting them sculpturally. This is also achieved through a lively hatching style, which Piras uses to create a complex interplay of shading.
Ferdinando Piras was born in Oristano in 1933. The premature death of his father and the war forced him to wander. However, he fully experienced the drama of the Foibe and the front in Tuscany, before settling in the Marche region, where he trained at the Corridonia School of Arts and Crafts. He arrived in Milan in 1955, where he worked as an inlayer and carver. He collaborated with Crippa and Cassina. He studied chemistry. He joined the "Milanese Scapigliatura" group and participated in the Milan Triennale, winning the Bollate Prize and the Leonardo d'Argento Award. In 1967, Piras moved to the Marche region, where he explored the art of engraving.
