Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. The painting in question has been attributed to Salvatore Fergola, one of the most important representatives of the Posillipo School. This group of painters, active between the 18th and 19th centuries, focused exclusively on landscape painting, offering a distinctly lyrical and romantic interpretation.
The work, attributed to Salvatore Fergola, undoubtedly displays excellent pictorial quality. The painter's aim was to faithfully represent the landscape, infusing it with a romantic mood. Therefore, the most striking feature, immediately apparent, is the perfect naturalistic rendering. Every detail is precisely rendered by the artist in a composition that features a harmonious perspective in which all the landscape elements are balanced. The artist's touch is extremely delicate, shading objects and merging them into space in a continuous play of tonal transitions that defines the space through the use of light. And it is precisely through light that this landscape is given a decidedly romantic character, in the best tradition of the Posillipo School. This is especially evident in the hues of the sky, immortalized in a poetic sunset, which shifts naturally from orange to pink, bathing the mountains and the water's surface in golden reflections. From a formal point of view, the artist alternates a more detailed brushstroke when he wants to focus on the description of details, with a more synthetic draft to ensure freshness in the execution.
The work has been attributed to Salvatore Fergola, a Neapolitan artist who lived between 1796 and 1874, considered one of the most important representatives of the Posillipo School. He followed in his father's footsteps, both in his use of tempera and in his approach to landscapes, modeled after Jakob Philipp Hackert, so much so that he can be considered his legitimate heir. Fergola soon became a painter to the Bourbon court; in fact, for this reason, on the one hand, his paintings enjoyed elite distribution, and on the other, with his prints, he attracted a wider audience, made up of bourgeoisie interested in new cultural consumption. In his works, the Neapolitan artist depicted the important events of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and lyrical landscapes bathed in a warm golden light.
