Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. This work is part of a comprehensive series in which Fernando Gutierrez focused on views of the city of Venice.
This work is a significant example of Fernando Gutierrez's work, which consistently seeks to transfigure reality into its own symbolic system, often comprised of hermetic signs and images. Thus, the Venetian view also transcends conventionality to fully communicate the artist's magical perception. For this reason, formally, Fernando Gutierrez's compositions are based on the pursuit of pure lines and pure colors. Reality is assimilated by the artist and reconstructed through a geometric rationalization that reduces everything to the bare minimum of sensibility. While color rests on a sulfurous and nuanced matrix, Gutierrez's lines are slender and elegant, charged with expressiveness in their movement. There is a playfulness, a sense of the fairytale that, in some ways, brings Gutierrez's geometry closer to that of Paul Klee, especially in his vibrant use of color.
Fernando Gutierrez De Velasco was born in 1938 in Bilbao (Vizcaya) and was a student of Juan Miró's Picasso school. His early work is closely linked to the painter Ortega. He began painting social realism with him on the streets of Vizcaya, demonstrating his solidarity with the miners of Asturias. In 1964, he moved to Paris, where he still works in Ortega's studio. Having settled permanently in Italy, he furthered his studies at the Brera Academy under Maestro Usellini. He has participated in numerous exhibitions and competitions, always receiving the most prestigious awards.
