These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. With the development of 19th-century realism, everyday subjects were considered as important as historical or religious ones. The artist Ferruccio Rontini drew inspiration primarily from popular genre scenes set in rural settings.

The style of Ferruccio Rontini, a founding member of the Gruppo Labronico, stems from the post-Macchiaioli tradition. However, his pictorial production represents a reworking, in a more expressionist vein, of that same tradition. Thus, the brushstrokes become more concise, delineating subjects characterized by a concise essentiality. The individual features of the objects are reduced in favor of the expressive power of the scene. The spatial setting is also concise, and depth is hinted at only by the overlapping of chromatic areas. The colors have the clear tones typical of Ferruccio Rontini's palette.

Ferruccio Rontini (Florence, 1893 – Livorno, 1964) was a Tuscan painter. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and immediately devoted himself to painting natural landscapes from life. In Livorno, he met Ugo Manaresi and Renuccio Renucci, and in 1919 he settled in Maremma, where he created his first works featuring countryside scenes, woodlands, farmhouses, and herds. In 1920, he became one of the founders of the Gruppo Labronico and exhibited in various shows in the city that same year. Other solo exhibitions followed in Livorno and other cities in northern Italy, which were highly successful.
