Description of the work
Description of the work
With the work "Florence. Places, People, Visions," which inaugurates the new art book series "Cities of Italy," the Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia intends to contribute to the revival of awareness of the vital dimension inherent in urban space and its connection to the social community, and to support the call for a shared sense of belonging, expressed more than anything else by the bond between the city, its citizens, and its cultural heritage.
The common thread running through the volume lies in the connection between "city" and "citizens." The volume unfolds in three parallel iconographic paths, titled Places, People, and Visions, introduced by Tomaso Montanari and a series of essays spanning a time span from the nineteenth century to the present day.
The illustrations that make up the three itineraries all belong to the heritage of the Alinari Brothers Photographic Archive, which was founded in Florence in 1852 and represents the oldest and one of the most important Italian institutions in the field of photography and image communication.
Treccani dedicates a series to the Italian regions, titled "Italy," which begins with the volume "Sicily," edited by Giovanni Puglisi. The series is intended as a journey of discovery through the history and traditions, heritage, and places inherited from an illustrious past, cherished and defended by women and men who, with passion and hope, preserve an idea of community.
The book "Sicily" describes the island from an unusual perspective, through a variety of voices that highlight its unconventional aspects. A detailed analysis of the island's "beauties" is thus combined with a description of its atmosphere, of those characteristics, not only geographical or artistic, that make it, like many places in the South, a unique place in the world.
The work is divided into three sections: the first focuses on places as physical reality, the second is dedicated to the memories and sensations generated by the union between past and present, and the third concerns still-living traditions and socio-economic aspects.
The more than 700 illustrations are mostly by great Sicilian photographers: from period images by Giuseppe Incorpora, Dante and Giuseppe Cappellani, Antonino and Tommaso Tagliarini, to contemporary works by Enzo Brai, Alfio Garozzo, Giuseppe Leone, Melo Minnella, Giuseppe Muccio, Luigi Nifosì, Angelo Pitrone, Ferdinando Scianna, Shoba, and Attilio Russo; but also images by photographers drawn to Sicily, such as Gustave Eugène Chauffourier, Gabriel De Rumine, Giorgio Sommer, Folco Quilici, and Fosco Maraini.
