Description of the work
Description of the work
Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s, encompassing all fields of artistic research. Specifically, in the visual arts, Surrealism sought to explore the human subconscious and translate it into artwork through a mechanical writing process based on dream analysis. Consequently, Surrealist artworks propose the representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely dissociated from reality. However, this representation often relies on a hyperrealistic formal rendering, precisely to paradoxically accentuate the illusory and ambiguous nature of the surreal dimension.
Even in his watercolor technique, Flavio Zappitelli maintains the high quality of his work. Here, we find a composition crafted with the painterly elegance of a few, very light washes of color. The work is therefore particularly interesting in demonstrating how a master illustrator like Zappitelli is capable of creating works of striking impact even with limited formal means. Despite the composition's synthetic nature, the ethereal figures possess great expressive potential, and their surreal quality perfectly aligns with the aesthetic developed by this artist.
Flavio Zappitelli was born in 1970 in Montenero di Bisaccia, but has lived in Milan for many years, after brief stints in New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Berlin, London, and Paris. He enjoys working in a blend of illustration, painting, and storyboarding. After years of self-taught training, he attended the School of Comics in Milan, specializing in painting and storyboarding. Today, he continues to study the techniques he learned on his own, drawn to a wide variety of subjects. He has illustrated books and created illustrations for the internet. For a Milanese advertising agency, he collaborated on storyboards for the Seat Leon and for a cough syrup commercial. He has exhibited his oil paintings in a group exhibition.
