Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. The "seascape" in particular is a recurring theme among artists. First, for the lyricism implicit in views overlooking the sea or romantic images of small ports. Second, because the depiction of aquatic surfaces allows painters to give free rein to their chromatic flair, thanks to refined interplays of reflections and reverberations. The artist Ugo Flumiani is known for his production of seascapes. His favorite subjects are views of the Venetian lagoon, seaside villages, or boats peacefully sailing.
Ugo Flumiani's choice of subjects featuring aquatic surfaces, in which to allow chromatic and luminous vibrations to reverberate, is also coherent from a formal perspective. Indeed, the Trieste-born artist's pictorial style is based on an essentially impressionistic language that allows him to capture every single reflection on the canvas. His hatching, composed of short, dense brushstrokes, is therefore aimed at the immediate representation of a perfect and unique condition of light and atmosphere. All this is set within a framework of harmonious naturalism, where the landscape is the absolute protagonist of the painting, in a composition of highly lyrical value.
Ugo Flumiani was an important artist from Trieste, born in 1876 and died in 1938. He trained first at the Academy of Venice, under the guidance of Guglielmo Ciardi, and then in Bologna. Flumiani quickly achieved fame and notoriety with his landscapes and seascapes filled with sunlight. He exhibited his works in important exhibitions such as the Venice International in 1899, in 1909 (Golden Hour), in 1910 (The Mirror, Autumn Song, and Butterflies), and again in 1924 (Reflections and Fortunale). He exhibited at the Turin Quadriennale in 1923 and 1927.
