Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of this work was conceived through a citationist approach. In the phenomenology of artistic movements, citationism consists of re-proposing an image or language from the past, from the historical-artistic tradition, recontextualizing it according to the sensibility of the contemporary artist. Citationism has been and is transversal to various contemporary artistic movements, such as Surrealism, Metaphysical Art, and Anachronism. Francesca Capitini's artistic production presents a search for naturalism that directly connects to the Italian Renaissance and other classicist movements. One of the most important concepts in the history of artistic production, in fact, has been that of "mimesis," or the human need to imitate and reproduce nature, that which surrounds us. Nature is understood as everything that can be grasped through the five senses—in short, phenomenal reality. Figurative and naturalistic tendencies in art can be considered those that, in the representation of the world, adhere most closely to this objective and sensorial dimension, leaving little room for abstraction and subjective interpretation.
In this work by Francesca Capitini, the reference to Renaissance art is evident in the choice of subject: the delicate and plump putti seem to come from a painting by Raphael or a fresco by Correggio. But above all, it is the form with which the representation is realized that harks back to a specific Renaissance context. The group is compact, yet free in its movements within space. The subjects are characterized by a monumental plasticity, which is a clear reference to the later phase of the Renaissance. All this, however, is contextualized in a personalized interpretation. Above all, the space is subject to an arbitrary and complex application. Furthermore, the entire work is created with an evanescent layer designed to evoke a bygone dimension. The same is true for the antique patina, which is appropriately created by the artist to accentuate the poetic value of the reference.
Francesca Capitini was born in Assisi in 1978. Her artistic training took place in Spello with the master Elvio Marchionni, who introduced her to the revival of Umbrian Renaissance painting, using fresco techniques. She achieved considerable popularity, especially after creating a fresco of the Nativity in the Chapel of the Relics in the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi.
