Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The Impressionists, in particular, favored subjects related to modern life in urban, bourgeois settings.
This painting is part of a series of very small works by Francesco Coppa. The subjects are always small genre scenes, depicting life in the countryside and in seaside towns, or landscapes and seascapes of the Sicilian coast. The execution reveals a highly painterly Francesco Coppa, who constructs these scenes with great freshness and immediacy. The style is extremely cursive, almost sketchy: with a few deft brushstrokes, the painter manages to bring the subjects to life and create space, all through color.
Francesco Coppa is a painter originally from Acireale, where he was born in 1954. He primarily works with genre scenes and landscapes, employing a strong impressionistic technique. Throughout his career, he has also experimented with more figurative forms of expression, including hyperrealist and metaphysical aesthetics.
