Description of the work
Description of the work
In "Ultimo sole in Calabria," Francesco Garofoli captures the quiet of a Calabrian village at sunset. The etching shows the village composed of simple, orderly houses, whose sloping roofs and rough walls emerge precisely thanks to the contrasts of light and shadow. In the background, the rolling hills stretch away, shaded in delicate tones that suggest the distance and serenity of the landscape.
Etching is an indirect engraving technique that uses acid to etch a metal plate. The surface of the plate is first protected with a layer, then etched with a fine point. Next, the plate is immersed in acid, which corrodes the unprotected areas. After ink is applied, the design remains in the grooves while the rest of the surface is cleaned, then the design is transferred to paper using a press. Etching allows for detailed designs, while aquatint, which is based on a similar process, allows for shading and tones to be achieved through graining on the plate. In this work , shadows and highlights alternate clearly, thanks to the skill of the technique, where the darker areas are achieved through acid etching.
Francesco Garofoli is an artist known for his mastery of printmaking, particularly etching. His work is distinguished by his technical prowess and the emotional intensity he conveys through the contrast between light and shadow. Using precise lines and delicate shading, Garofoli captures landscapes, architecture, and everyday scenes with great expression, capturing the essence and atmosphere of each subject.
