“Francis the American Pope” is a work produced in a limited edition of 1,425 numbered copies by UTET Grandi Opere of the Cose Belle d'Italia Group, signed by FMR, and written by Silvina Pérez, who directs the Spanish edition of the Osservatore Romano, and Lucetta Scaraffia, professor of contemporary history at Sapienza University and editor of the monthly magazine “Donne Chiesa Mondo” of the Holy See newspaper.

"The work is a tribute to the Pope, who has turned 80 and is in his fifth year of pontificate," explained Marco Castelluzzo, president and CEO of Utet Grandi Opere, in his introductory remarks in the Senate's Parliamentary Acts Room, which hosted the book presentation a few days ago.

"When I heard about a new book on the Pope, I thought: aren't we at risk of 'papolatry,' the cult of the Pontiff's personality? This book doesn't fall into that trap; it's well-researched and compelling," said Archbishop Angelo Becciu, Substitute of the Secretariat of State, in his remarks.

"I think this pope," the Archbishop added, "has touched the hearts of so many people who are far from the Church. Francis's strength is his spontaneity, his enthusiasm, which helps us live the Gospel without frills. Presenting it in a fresh way was important. These were four years in which, with his smile, his spontaneous gestures, his profound and simple words, he spoke to the hearts of so many people and changed the way we perceive the Church."

For Silvina Pèrez, "in this book, a great visual artist, Giuliano Vangi, also affected by the Pope Francis cyclone, has successfully translated and given us his perspectives on things, people, actions, and mercy. Francis is a beloved and popular pope, also because he is a pope who arrives, because he says what he does and does what he says."

“Francis, the American Pope because he is the Pope who comes from the other side of the world, who sees the world from another point of view, which continually amazes us Europeans who are constantly subjected to a cultural revolution, and we greatly needed it,” explained Lucetta Scaraffia, the other author.

The volume, whose preface is edited by Giovanni Maria Vian, Director of the Osservatore Romano, has the characteristics of a large-format collector's book and also contains the full text of Pope Bergoglio's three main documents: the apostolic exhortation "Evangelii gaudium," the encyclical "Laudato si'," and the apostolic exhortation "Amoris laetitia."
