Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
In these small landscapes, painter Francesco Mancini uses a very rapid and concise brushstroke. The brushstrokes are consistently thick, laden with color that spreads thickly. The surface is flattened, leaving little room for spatial depth. The entire composition resolves itself into an interlocking of planes, determined by the flow of the painter's technique. Given these characteristics of conciseness and marked expressiveness, it can be said that, in his pictorial language, Mancini is closer to an already Impressionist style, while maintaining a rather classical and traditional compositional style.
Francesco Mancini was a Neapolitan painter, born in 1830 and died in 1905. Trained at the Royal Institute of Fine Arts, he began his career with academic paintings of historical themes. In the late 1850s, he began painting from life, drawing on Impressionist influences in his style. In 1877, King Umberto I's acquisition of his painting "The Cliff," presented at the National Exhibition of Naples, brought him great fame. After his stays in London in the 1880s, he was nicknamed "Lord."
