Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
The stylistic approach to the subject's depiction can be likened to the Naïve movement. The Naïve artist is, by definition, self-taught, someone who hasn't attended an art school but has found inspiration within themselves. Stylistically, this translates into figurative painting that offers a simplified interpretation of reality, with infantile and unconsciously primitivist overtones. However, even the Naïve artist, in his spontaneity, possesses a self-awareness that leads him to develop a very specific aesthetic language, distinguishing it from amateurism. Thus, in this work, artist Francesco Marini tends to minimize the subject's physiognomic features and the landscape in the background, reducing everything to an immediate and instinctive representation. Yet in this simplification, the artist finds great expressive power, especially in the gestural nature of his brushstrokes. Thus, the qualities of a dense, mellow color communicate the existential complexity of the depicted figure.
As we can see from an analysis of this painting, the painter Francesco Marini is a representative of the 20th-century Italian Naïve school. His desire to achieve a childishness in the representation is evident, with the aim of characterizing the artwork with primordial values of purity and innocence.
