Description of the work
Description of the work
The work can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The Impressionists, in particular, favored subjects related to modern life in urban, bourgeois settings. The Palizzi brothers' paintings predominantly focus on popular genre scenes, inspired by the countryside and particularly pastoralism. Indeed, this family of painters was especially known for their animal reproductions.
The Palizzi brothers are renowned as the creators of an extraordinary nineteenth-century school of painting. Their genre scenes are distinguished by a remarkable refinement of execution, capable of reaching the highest levels of naturalism. Among others, Francesco Paolo Palizzi specialized in animal depictions, executed with great attention to detail. This small panel is a perfect example of the pictorial quality of the Palizzi brothers, and specifically of Francesco Paolo. The painter succeeds in creating an image of perfect and complete naturalism. This is particularly evident in the animals, whose figures are extremely lively and rich in anatomical detail. This is true even though Francesco Paolo Palizzi seems to favor a more synthetic, spot-like approach in this work, as is particularly evident in the vegetation. As is typical in this school of painting, the light spreads throughout the scene, clear and radiant.
Francesco Paolo Palizzi was born in Chieti in 1825 and died in Naples in 1871. He was the youngest of the Palizzi brothers and trained at the Academy of Naples. After an initial interest in history painting, he devoted himself to landscapes and animal paintings, a genre for which he employed a synthetic technique inspired by the style of his brother Filippo. He also worked extensively in still life. In 1857, he joined his brother Giuseppe in Paris, where he settled. In 1864, he sent Vieille bonne to the Promotrice Neapolitan, and in 1867, he presented La fiera a Château-Landon at the Paris Universal Exhibition. In 1870, following the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War, he returned to Italy, where he died while still young.
