Description of the work
Description of the work
Francesco Tomei views reality through a surreal and imaginative lens, also exploring his own unconscious. His painting reflects twentieth-century movements that focused on figuration, expressing their subject matter through images. These included artists such as Renato Guttuso, Corrado Cagli, Pietro Annigoni, and so on. The late twentieth century saw a shift toward new art forms such as conceptual art, minimalism, and body art, but there remained a segment of artists who insisted on remaining figurative. Figurative artworks from this period often feature realistic depictions of human subjects, landscapes, and objects. Francesco Tomei seeks to go further, creating a work with a contemporary feel, echoing Bernini's Baroque aesthetic, with The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa.
A strong and bold figurative style, as are the colors he uses, in Francesco Tomei's work the drawing seems to dominate the canvas, composing a pattern of bizarre similes that together create emotional tension. The use of bold shadows makes the composition almost dramatic and at the same time alienating. The women in costume lying on cloths and the Virgin in ecstasy convey a thoughtful and complex organization of space.
Francesco Tomei Born in Rome, where he lives and works, he graduated in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts. His first exhibition was in the group show at the ENAL club in Borgo a Mozzano. He moved to France, where he worked as a window dresser. In 1970, he was included in the 22nd Via Margutta Exhibition, with a solo show at the Etrusca Gallery. That same year, he was awarded first prize at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome. Also in the 1970s, he began a fruitful business relationship with Japan, where he exhibited in group shows.
