Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject falls within the genre scene category, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The artist Francesco Vassetti specializes in the production of lyrical and sentimental genre scenes. His subjects reflect a fascination with the elegant bourgeois world of the Belle Époque.
As we can see from this work, Francesco Vassetti has developed a complex pictorial language. He completely dismantles the drawing framework, allowing absolute freedom to the expressive potential of color. Thus, the figures are synthesized through a decidedly synthetic approach, constructed with broad, brief strokes of paint. His technique derives from post-Impressionism, which, in addition to conveying immediacy in execution, imbues the work with intense emotional and poetic vibrations. This painting by Vassetti is therefore a true masterpiece of polychromy, determined by the artist's ability to express his most intimate perception of reality through color.
Francesco Vassetti was born in Naples in 1936. Starting in the 1960s, after pursuing a career as a musician, he devoted himself full-time to painting, experimenting with abstract and surrealist forms until the 1970s. From 1980 onwards, he devoted himself almost exclusively to the Naples of the past, capturing on his canvases the ancient glimpses of Neapolitan daily life, now almost entirely lost. In addition to being held in private collections, some of Vassetti's works are exhibited in the Gallerie d'Arte Moderna of Florence, Venice, Skopje, Brasilia, San Francisco, and New York, among others.
