Description of the work
Description of the work
Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s and encompassed all fields of artistic research. Specifically, in the visual arts, Surrealism sought to explore the human subconscious and translate it into artwork through a mechanical writing process based on dream analysis. Consequently, Surrealist artworks propose the representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely dissociated from reality. However, this representation often relies on a hyperrealistic formal rendering, precisely to paradoxically accentuate the illusory and ambiguous nature of the surreal dimension.

As we can see from this work with its highly elaborate iconography, the artist Francis intends to evoke a true vision, one with fantastical and grotesque overtones. For this reason, drawing on the Surrealist tradition, his formal language is strongly figurative, evoking concrete images, even if they belong to another dimension, far removed from the sensible world. However, to heighten the fantastical overtones, this figurative concreteness is subjected to expressive distortions by the artist. Thus, the figures become elongated in proportion, and their features take on caricature-like, even monstrous, traits in some cases. The visionary element is also accentuated by the highly elaborate application of the paint, a pictorial style that does not diminish the concreteness of the images, yet still gives them a vivid, highly dynamic quality. From a chromatic perspective, there is great tonal coherence, based on grays, with the exception of a few flashes of brighter color.
From an analysis of this work, we can conclude that the painter Francis is an artist who draws on the Surrealist tradition and loves to evoke visions of the fantastic and the grotesque. His iconography is highly elaborate and expresses a profound creative flair that also draws on literary references. His language tends to be figurative, underpinned by a vibrant pictorialism.
