Description of the work
Description of the work
Franco Balan's works display a marked expressionist vocation, which tends to emphasize the expression of emotions. Expressionist art seeks to proclaim its moods to the world and flaunt them with passion. Formally, this translates into a summary rendering of figures, through a highly nervous and animated line, as well as the use of a violent color palette. These characteristics are found in the historical avant-garde movements of expressionism, such as Fauvism and the Die Brucke movement in Germany.
Franco Balan's Expressionism is characterized by a truly vehement and vigorous formality. The subject matter is almost brutally synthesised; the space is two-dimensional, and everything appears compressed. A powerful black line dominates, identifying broken forms, in the finest tradition of historical Expressionism. The objects appear distorted, following the fragmented rhythm of the entire composition. The painting's surface, almost chaotic in its brutalism, finds unity and balance in the color, which unifies in a coherent unity of brown and warm tones.
Franco Balan was born in Aosta in 1934 and passed away in 2013. In addition to being a painter, he was also an important graphic designer, focusing primarily on posters and advertising, amassing, over the years, a vast archive of drawings, sketches, and drafts. Over the course of his long career, during which he trained numerous graphic designers and taught in schools of all levels in Aosta and around the world, he won numerous awards, including the 1978 UN Prize for Graphic Design; the design of the logos and signage for the Gran Paradiso National Park; the creation of the Espace Mont-Blanc logo; and the posters for the 2006 Turin Winter Olympic Games.
