Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.
The work highlights Franco Bertulli's post-Impressionist maturity. The composition is compressed entirely into the foreground, allowing no spatial depth. The painter's aim is not to capture the sensory aspect of the subject, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstroke, rich in texture, intervenes, fleshing out the objects, breaking them down into different planes, recording the vibrations of light and life within them. The sensory aspect, therefore, is completely transcended in a complex conception of pictorial practice in which the artist's gestures also play a fundamental role. In floral-themed compositions, from a more purely aesthetic perspective, the composition resolves itself in a harmonious dialogue of chromatic zones. The dense brushstroke constructs each individual petal with its respective light vibrations. The very texture of the subject merges with the complexity of the space containing it, which is also made up of intense chromatic vibrations.
Franco Bertulli (Brescia, 1932 - 2001). After training as a painter, he opened a studio to teach the craft to young artists. He has held numerous solo and group exhibitions in Italy and is a member of the "Seven Painters of Reality" group with Piero Galanti, Angelo Fiessi, Adolfo Mutti, Martino Dolci; Gabriel Gatti, and Dino Decca. His art seeks truth through the exaltation of color with strong, bold tones.
