Description of the work
Description of the work
This work is part of a series of refined mixed media on paper in which Antonio Franco Bonetti focuses on the study of details taken from classical art and culture, reinterpreted within the artist's own context. The main interest lies in Bonetti's contextualization of the figures within the specifics of his aesthetic, which draws on a blend of quotationism, surrealism, and abstraction.
In terms of style, mixed media, compared to his easel work, allows Franco Bonetti to experiment with a more synthetic and minimalist language, where the sign prevails over the pictorial gesture. The figures, in fact, are delineated by an extremely elegant graphic line that explores volumes in a vibrant and dynamic form. The artist's skill lies in the strong personality he manages to imbue these figures with the simplicity of the sign, fused into highly intense chromatic surfaces.
Franco Bonetti (1938-2020). His career, spanning both painting and set design, took him throughout Italy and Europe, especially Spain, where he spent much of his time for decades, though he regularly returned to Albinea. In 1988, between Genoa and Reggio, he embarked on a journey that would lead him to dedicate himself to the work of Torquato Tasso. Over the following decade, marked by a myriad of exhibitions, he also devoted himself to sacred painting, creating two altarpieces for the church of Don Giovanni Bosco. In 2002, he created further altarpieces for places of worship in Reggio Emilia. In 2009, he tackled another great local classic, Matilde di Canossa, with the exhibition "Incipit Matilda," which was hosted for a long time at Palazzo Magnani.
