Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting's iconography is inspired by Giovanni Verga's famous novel "I Malavoglia," first published in 1881. More generally, the work's subject matter can be aligned with the social themes that began to gain prominence in art in the mid-19th century, coinciding with the rise of social questions in various European societies. The work of painters such as Millet and Daumier, for example, favored subjects related to life in the fields, factory work, or strikes. In Italy, among the first painters to engage deeply with social themes were Pellizza da Volpedo and, in the contemporary era, Renato Guttuso.
The Sicilian painter Franco Bracciante's style is based on a very fluid pictorial technique, charged with dense color. In this work, we can appreciate how this brushstroke helps the painter visually enhance his figures. Indeed, the subjects appear solid, with a squared, almost cubist-like plasticity. Bracciante's color palette is based on tones associated with work and the earth.
Franco Bracciante was born in Messina in 1947. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Palermo, where he still lives today. He is a figurative painter who practices traditional genres such as landscapes and still lifes, as well as iconography inspired by literary and mythological themes.
