Description of the work
Description of the work
Social themes and the theme of labor in art began to gain prominence in the mid-19th century, coinciding with the spread of social issues in various European societies. The work of painters such as Millet and Daumier, for example, favored subjects related to life in the fields, factory work, or strikes. In Italy, among the first painters to engage deeply with social themes were Pellizza da Volpedo and, in the contemporary era, Renato Guttuso. This graphic work by the sculptor Franco Fiabane depicts a scene set on a construction site. However, it can be said that this work, rather than a social representation, is more concerned with celebrating labor, as an expression of human strength and ingenuity.
The work is truly remarkable, demonstrating the drawing skills of an artist like Franco Fiabane, who has devoted much of his career to sculpture. These skills are truly extraordinary, as the scene is described in a language that is clear yet stylistically significant. The composition, in its didactic intelligibility, appears carefully calibrated and studied in every detail. The originality of the approach rests on the various levels of the narrative, creating a play of overlapping images and colors. Formally, moreover, Franco Fiabane's graphic style excels in precisely delineating the subjects and bringing them to life with a lively hatching that blurs them with subtle shadows.
Franco Fiabane was born in Belluno, the city where he lives and works, in 1937. His initiation to art began at a young age in an artisan's workshop, where he studied under his father Berto, a highly talented sculptor. Later, he collaborated with the sculptor Augusto Murer. From 1974 onwards, spurred by growing public and critical acclaim, he began exhibiting in Italy and abroad and participating in competitions for public works. Among his commissions are the Resurrection with Survivors (Saint Anthony) in the Vajont Church; the Madonna of Loreto at Belluno Airport; the Monument to the Alpine Troops in Castion; the War Memorial for the Ideal in Soverzene; the Deposition for a chapel in Mogliano; and the Tabernacle, the Annunciation, and the Crucifix in the Recreation Rooms in Bolzano.
