Description of the work
Description of the work
Gentilini's work depicts an urban view. In the foreground are several figures arranged along a street, between buildings with clearly visible signs. The architecture is simplified, with square shapes and linear facades. In the background, a monumental building with columns can be seen. The image is constructed in a minimalist manner, with careful attention to the spatial arrangement of the elements.
The stroke is precise and clean, typical of engraving. The forms are simplified, the volumes clear, and the perspective does not follow classical rules. The figures are firm, with sharp contours and deliberately unnatural proportions. The overall effect is balanced, with a clear and essential composition.
Franco Gentilini (Faenza, 1909 – Rome, 1981) was an Italian artist known for his ability to combine painting and drawing in a distinctive, personal style. After beginning his career as an apprentice craftsman, he furthered his training in Faenza, Bologna, and Paris. He participated in major art exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadrennial, coming into contact with the international avant-garde and the Roman School. His subjects ranged from urban scenes to portraits, including landscapes and figures from everyday life. His technique is distinguished by the use of textured backgrounds and a strong graphic style, often enriched with references to the decorative arts and Italian traditions.
