Description of the work
Description of the work
Animal portraits in art have ancient origins, even appearing in primitive cave paintings. For religious reasons, various types of animals appear in the works of various ancient civilizations. It was especially in the Middle Ages, within the International Gothic style, that animal depictions became widespread as true life portraits, both within works of art and in notebooks of drawings and sketches. The presence of animals as subjects in art remained constant until the contemporary era.
Franco Gentilini's style is the fruit of personal research that has led to the creation of his own world with surreal, fairy-tale overtones. In constructing his characters, Franco Gentilini draws inspiration from a fanciful Middle Ages or a magical world, as in this case, where the subjects are the product of a colorful synthesis. Formally, this research is based on a high-level graphic elegance that perfectly matches the artist's boundless imagination. In this beautiful engraving, too, we see how a simple line describes the bird's form, the dreamlike landscape, and the objects in the foreground. Reality is reworked in a creative and imaginative manner, subverting spatial rules and juxtaposing disparate elements with a disorienting effect. The work is completed by the application of color, which focuses on shades of blue and purple that enhance the composition's magic.
Franco Gentilini was born in Faenza in 1909 and passed away in Rome in 1981. He studied his city's ceramic tradition and later completed his artistic training in Bologna. In 1929, he moved to Rome, where he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts. His art, fairytale-like, dreamlike, ironic, and colorful, was expressed not only in painting, but also in graphic design, set design, and book illustration.
