Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

This work marks a more figurative phase in Franco Hippert's artistic career. In this "seascape," the painter seems interested only in achieving a complete naturalistic rendering of the landscape before him. The composition is very traditional, following the rules of orthogonal perspective. The painter, however, demonstrates his talent through a descriptive freshness evident in his ability to capture all the chromatic vibrations of the waves. The landscape is bathed in a silky sunlight.

Franco Hippert is a Livorno-based painter born in 1932. He is essentially an academically trained artist, but possesses a modern sensibility that leads him to experimentation. His favorite subjects are landscapes, vases of flowers, and still lifes.
