Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
The style developed by Franco Marzilli highlights a post-Impressionist maturity. The compositions are all compressed into the foreground, without allowing any spatial depth. The painter's aim is not to capture the sensory aspect of the subject, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstrokes, rich in texture, intervene, which, despite the essentiality of the representation, flesh out the objects, breaking them down into different planes, recording the vibrations of light and life within them. In this work, the choice of a sepia-toned monochrome and the almost casual compositional layout give the impression of a photographic snapshot.
Franco Marzilli was born in Rome in 1934. He began exhibiting in 1962 in various Italian galleries and, between the late 1960s and early 1970s, was invited to present his work in New York, London, and Paris, where he lived for a short time. Upon returning to Italy, he moved to live in the Sabine countryside. Among his many exhibitions in private galleries and public spaces, noteworthy are his solo shows at the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences of Cardiff University in 1973 and at the Sala de Exposiciones of the City of Buenos Aires in 1997. Among the many illustrious critics who have examined his work are Carmine Benincasa, Toni Bonavita, Carlo Fabrizio Carli, Costanzo Costantini, Floriano De Santi, Carlo Giacomozzi, Sebastiano Grasso, Michelangelo Masciotta, Ruggero Martines, Carlo Melloni, Dario Micacchi, Terence Mullaly, Edith Schloss, Guglielmo
Petroni, Marcello Venturoli, and Max Wykes-Joice. Franco Marzilli died in Poggio Mirteto in 2010.
