Description of the work
Description of the work
"Onali is shy and has always thought more about solving problems in private I study his creative problems rather than trying to bring them to the pages laminated from a catalogue. (...) The quality of style in Onali is remains faithful to the painter's visual sensibility." Franco Onali (Rome 1932) studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and Florence, with Cipriano Oppo, Marcello Avenali, Ugo Capocchini and Mario Mafai. He attended the studios of Marino Mazzacurati and Roberto Melli, and in Stockholm he is a designer in the studio of the architect Tham. He has collaborated with Mario Marenco since he was very young, a collaboration that led him to design decorations for the Lanspar Bank in Stockholm, for ICE, for the Italian Agriculture pavilions in Algiers, for L'Alimentazione in Cologne and for Lancia in Bologna. He collaborated with the Swedish weeklies Fib and Svenska, for Rai creating sets for Renzo Arbore's programmes on Rai-Uno. He designed furniture for the companies Miù, Uving, Cyrus, Company, Le Favero, Linea Uno and Matteo Grassi. For a long period he moved to Saudi Arabia to decorate the interiors of private residences and hotels in Jeddah. He has exhibited his works in Bologna, Lugano, Stockholm, Rome, New York, Tokyo, Las Vegas, Buenos Aires, and participated in the "Oro d'Autore" exhibitions in 1988 and 1992, confirming the extraordinary bond he has with the city of Arezzo, his long-standing creative refuge. Anna Roncoroni presents Franco Onali "The story of a love made of magical coincidences and molecular combinations, born between wounds and gauze. A different story. I have been fortunate, in these long years of cohabitation, spent between the monastic cell on Via Dei Coronari where we currently live, and the vast green spaces of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, to observe the birth of his works day after day! A long journey from the 1950s to today, which has passed through many phases. I didn't know him then, but through his canvases, I have experienced his profound memories. He continually recreates his story with his images, and he is relentless in tackling the same problem a hundred thousand times, varying his approach. He is agile in moving from one theme to another, and doesn't worry if a painting seems seemingly unfinished. His constant research gives power to his art, and his still-picture paintings, with their colors and tonal relationships, spring from his ideas and thoughts. He can be charming or aloof depending on his mood, but he remains unwaveringly faithful to one passion: freedom. Despite the advancing years, his vitality and movement never cease to grow, giving us values of pure creativity and poetry, thus manifesting his psychic intoxication."
