Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
It can be said that Franco Sumberaz is truly an artist who revolutionized the genre scene. His subjects are drawn from everyday life, simple situations from real life, yet transfigured into a dreamlike dimension. The composition itself is unique in this painter. The scene's composition is rational, based on pure lines and geometric shapes. This implies a rigidity that is completely negated by Sumberaz's elaborate pictorial style. His pictorial layering is dense with texture and color and almost seems to corrode the objects, characterizing them instead with existential vibrations.
Franco Sumberaz is originally from Fiume, but lives and works in Livorno. He has been a restorer for some time. In 1985, he was invited to Paris to the "L'Espace de l'Union des Banques" for a show of Tuscan painters, and the following year he held a solo exhibition in the French capital. In 1988, another important solo exhibition was held at the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara. He collaborated with choreographer Micha van Hoecke on painting performances and contemporary dance pieces. In 1995, he was invited by Cristina Muti, President of the Ravenna Festival, to hold a solo exhibition at the Sala Italia in Ravenna.
