Description of the work
Description of the work
The myth of Orpheus and Eurydice tells the story of an intense love: Orpheus, an exceptional musician, descends into the Underworld to try to bring back his beloved Eurydice, who died prematurely. Franco Sumberaz's painting seems to depict the crucial moment when Eurydice is about to be lost forever. At the center of the work, Eurydice appears light and almost transparent, as if she were fading away; Orpheus, on the left, turns toward her with a look full of emotion and perhaps regret. These elements suggest that this is the moment of final separation, when Orpheus is unable to hold onto Eurydice and loses her forever. On the right, other figures participate in the scene, contributing to an atmosphere of sadness and tension. Through this myth, the artist reflects on universal themes such as love, separation, and the fragility of life.
Franco Sumberaz's style is figurative and meticulously detailed. The figures are well-drawn, with a bold use of light and shadow. Dark, warm colors, such as red and black, help create a dramatic and intense atmosphere. The work has an almost theatrical feel, as if the characters were performing on a stage.
Franco Sumberaz was born in Rijeka in 1939 and has lived in Livorno since 1946. He studied art in Lucca and graduated in Art History in Florence. Besides painting, he worked on the restoration of important Italian frescoes, which greatly influenced his painting style. In his works, he always seeks a connection with reality, but transforms it through culture, myths, and emotions. For him, painting is a way to reflect on the present, on the problems of the world, and on the relationship between humanity and nature. His art also aims to convey a positive message, combining beauty and thought.
