Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

Corrado Frateantonio's pictorial language is distinguished by a kind of realism/expressionism when he portrays subjects of popular extraction with very pronounced facial features. The backgrounds of his works are always characterized by very simple landscapes, constructed on simple lines and rigorous geometries. This character is also respected in this lithograph focusing on the seascape, which is indeed distinguished by its simplicity, constructed as it is on the clear horizon line that divides the streaks of sky from those of sea. This subdivision establishes a play of tonal balances, complementary to each other, which gives the lithograph a great aesthetic impact. At the center, at the point where all the lines converge, the distant island appears, its triangular shape constituting the harmonious fulcrum of the entire work. In the lower part, the stylised representation of the two seagulls appears as an elegant play of sinuous lines that momentarily break the linear rigour of Frateantonio's landscape.

Corrado Frateantonio was born in Avola in 1941. He followed an artistic family and lived and worked in Sicily and Lazio. He began his artistic career at a young age, first focusing on set design and then on painting. In Rome in the 1960s, he promoted the "Libera Arte" movement, leading a group of skilled artists who expressed new trends in social painting. His paintings captured the essence of Sicily, the dignity of workers, and focused especially on the many social and cultural aspects of his homeland. Frateantonio passed away in May 2011. On the first anniversary of his death, the Avola Municipality remembered him by organizing an anthological exhibition (from 1960 to 2010) in the Convent of San Domenico (Cenacolo dei Domenicani), which has been named after the Maestro since 2014. His works are exhibited in Italy and abroad and are now among the most prized in international collections.
