Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism. The nude human figure is central to Fulvio Caligiuri's pictorial research in his original work, which combines figurative language with a touch of symbolism and abstraction.
The human body is central to Fulvio Caligiuri's paintings, but in his original aesthetic, the depiction of the nude is not based on a naturalistic rendering. Indeed, Calugiuri is not interested in reproducing from life; he focuses instead on the exaltation of formal values and plasticity. For this reason, he transforms his subjects into statues, a creative juxtaposition of pictorial and sculptural media. In this sense, this artist's technique is excellent in reproducing the whiteness of marble, tinged with reflections and reflections of light. From a conceptual perspective, the representations acquire an enigmatic atmosphere, placing them in a refined symbolist dimension. Fulvio Caligiuri's paintings are complemented by abstract spaces that present geometric compositions, almost like mosaics reflecting the light.
Fulvio Caligiuri (Ceccano 1930, Rome 2011). Painter and illustrator, lyrical and expressionist figurative. He has exhibited in Rome, London, Paris, New York, Melbourne, and Toronto. His most recent solo exhibitions include: "L'Agostiniana" (Rome); "Il Duomo" (Rieti); "Il Mondo dell'Arte" (Fiuggi). In the 1950s, while continuing his studies and practicing various sports, he was already exhibiting his works in galleries and art events in the capital. The acclaim was such that in the 1960s he was able to dedicate himself professionally to art. In 1973 and 1974, he directed the independent "Accademia Internazionale del Nudo". He has received important commissions from religious institutions, including "L'Agape Fraterna" (Fraternal Agape), five works by the "Padri Scolopi" (Piarists), one of which depicts the founder, Saint Joseph Calasanz, and is exhibited at the Historical Museum of the "Padri Scolopi" in Krakow.
