Description of the work
Description of the work
Since the 19th century, when painting began to explore various aspects of bourgeois life, the circus world has been a theme explored by various artists. With the development of Symbolist and Expressionist movements between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the figure of the acrobat, circus artist, or mask began to gain popularity, as it played a key role in the development of complex iconographies with hidden and mysterious meanings. Examples include the figures of artists and harlequins immortalized by Picasso during his "blue" and "rose" periods. During the 1970s and 1980s, it became a true genre, practiced by many painters, who focused their interest primarily on the figure of the clown or harlequin.
The harlequin, a figure with Symbolist connotations, does not evoke a naturalistic rendering. In fact, Calugiuri is not interested in reproducing from life; he focuses his attention on the exaltation of formal values and plasticity. In this sense, this artist's technique is excellent in reproducing an almost sculptural figure, pervaded by reverberations and reflections of light. From a conceptual perspective, the representation acquires an enigmatic atmosphere, placing it in a refined Symbolist dimension. Fulvio Caligiuri's paintings are complemented by abstract spaces that present geometric compositions, almost like mosaics reflecting the light.
Fulvio Caligiuri (Ceccano 1930, Rome 2011). Painter and illustrator, lyrical and expressionist figurative. He has exhibited in Rome, London, Paris, New York, Melbourne, and Toronto. His most recent solo exhibitions include: “L'Agostiniana” (Rome); “Il Duomo” (Rieti); “Il Mondo dell'Arte” (Fiuggi). In the 1950s, while continuing his studies and practicing various sports, he was already exhibiting his works in galleries and art events in the capital. The acclaim was such that in the 1960s he was able to dedicate himself professionally to art. In 1973 and 1974, he directed the independent “International Academy of the Nude.” He has received important commissions from religious organizations, including “L'Agape Fraterna,” five works by the “Padri Scolopi,” one of which depicts the founder, Saint Joseph Calasanz, and is exhibited at the Historical Museum of the “Padri Scolopi” in Krakow.
