Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
In both his portraits and landscapes, Furio Cavallini's approach to the subject is evident, with a distinctly post-impressionist edge toward expressionism. Broad, textured brushstrokes, with a strong structural quality, construct the objects. Each brushstroke is placed on a different plane, creating the subject's volume. Everything is characterized by a highly pictorial quality that almost dissolves form and space, imbuing the work with a powerful expressiveness. Typical of Furio Cavallini is his palette, which tends toward brown tones.
Furio Cavallini, Piombino 1929 – Cecina 2012. In 1952 he held his first solo exhibition at the Palazzo di Parte Guelfa in Florence. In 1957, at the VIII National Exhibition of the Fiorino Prize in Florence, he was awarded the Publishers and Printers Prize. In 1979, the Culture Department of the Municipality of Milan organized a solo exhibition of his work entitled Immagini del Quotidiano. In 1984, an anthological exhibition of his drawings was held at the Corrente Foundation in Milan.
