Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. Genre scenes, inspired by candid and sincere everyday life, also include the subject of the ballerina, a subject that boasts an illustrious tradition from Degas onwards.
Gianfranco Antoni's pictorial language rests on solid foundations recognizable in each of his works. First and foremost, an objective conception of painting leads the artist to depict phenomenal reality on canvas as it is perceived by his senses, without subjective filters. This approach is supported by an excellent painting technique that allows Antoni to achieve a perfectly naturalistic rendering. Physiognomic and anatomical perfection is pursued in every detail through a light, impressionistic application of color. As further support, the artist adds a balanced dose of incident light, which, striking the subjects, creates a natural play of shadows. Characteristic of Gianfranco Antoni is undoubtedly his chromaticism, composed of warm tones that further enhance the effects of light.
Gianfranco Antoni was a Florentine painter born in 1925 and died in 1992. His recurring themes are linked to a simple and humble world: figures of common people, everyday objects. The artist interprets this world with an equally simple style of painting that could be defined as impressionist or realist due to its spontaneity and search for immediacy. However, Antoni manages to enliven his works with a realism characterized by delicate pictorial effects.
