Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. This work by Giacomo De Michelis features a beautiful view of the Piazza di Spagna in Rome.

In this work, inspired by a Roman view, we can also appreciate the remarkable pictorial quality of the artist Giacomo De Michelis. His language is largely based on the expressive qualities of color. The artist almost completely eliminates drawing to construct the subject through a dense, dynamically hued impasto. Thus, we can appreciate how the entire space of the work is structured around a coherent palette of blues, violets, and grays, whose tones have a spiritual rather than realistic quality, lending unity to the entire composition. From a formal perspective, the painting is very rapid and cursive, creating an image brimming with freshness.
Artist Giacomo De Michelis, born in 1935, had a very adventurous life. Throughout his career, he frequented Fusco, Moretti, and Omiccioli, and had the opportunity to meet Dalí, Picasso, and other masters. He was also an amateur actor during the 1970s, appearing in films such as Luigi Comencini's "Lo scopone scientifico" and Mino Guerrini's "Gli altri racconti di Canterbury."
