Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. In the pictorial production of the Tuscan Graziano Marsili, heavily influenced by the Macchiaioli and post-Macchiaioli traditions, landscape depiction exhibits the perfect blend of descriptive realism and an impressionistic rendering of sensory detail.
Even in his more specifically landscape views, artist Graziano Marsili maintains a highly realistic vision of the perceptible world. However, we can see how, in a work like this, the immediate rendering of atmospheric details and lighting conditions prevails over the narrative of everyday life. For this reason, the present canvas accentuates the impressionistic characteristics typical of plein air painting, which are nevertheless a constant in Graziano Marsili's oeuvre. The brushstrokes, then, unfold even more rapidly and succinctly, intent on capturing every single vibration of light, especially in the reflections on the grassy surface or the horses' coats. As usual, the entire space is pervaded by a clear luminosity, achieved through the painter's characteristic chromatic clarity.
Graziano Marsili was born in Bagno a Ripoli in 1939 and lives and works in Florence. He trained in the studio of painter Giuseppe Mazzon, who introduced him to the study of life painting. His career has been marked by numerous exhibitions, both in Italy and abroad. Graziano Marsili's painting is profoundly influenced by the Tuscan tradition of the Macchiaioli and post-Macchiaioli movements, whereby the truthful depiction of reality merges with the impressionistic lyricism of a vibrant and immediate rendering.
