Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The Neapolitan artist Guglielmo Migliore is well-known for his production of lively genre scenes that depict, with passionate realism, life in the neighborhoods of the Neapolitan city.
Guglielmo Migliore's genre scenes, inspired by the world of the common people, display remarkable technical and compositional skill. His subjects are constructed almost entirely through color, which he expertly distributes with loose brushstrokes charged with luminous vibrations. Thus, his paintings acquire a marked immediacy and freshness, yet are accompanied by a remarkable realism in the depiction of the city skyline, the candid depiction of everyday life, rich in detail and particulars. In this painting, Migliore, to accentuate the realistic tone of the representation, constructs the scene with a highly casual, diagonal layout. Furthermore, the use of light is highly evocative, standing out clearly against the building wall, while the space beneath the awning is shrouded in deep shadow.
Guglielmo Migliore was a Neapolitan painter, born in 1922 and died in 2005. His entire artistic output was devoted to popular genre scenes, celebrating life in the neighborhoods and alleys of Naples. His style is profoundly realist, yet with a distinctly impressionistic edge.
