Description of the work
Description of the work
The subjects of the artist Gigi Pedroli can be classified, in some way, as genre scenes, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. Thus, in Gigi Pedroli's works, ordinary characters appear, captured in the most varied and curious everyday situations. All of this, however, is always crafted with an ironic, grotesque tone, with strong symbolic connections that, in some cases, verge on surrealism.
Throughout his artistic output, Gigi Pedroli has developed a truly original and coherent stylistic language. His symbolic genre scenes are always executed with a playfulness and biting irony. Formally, this translates into a decidedly objective, dry, and minimal figurative style. Pedroli's objectivity is based on the exaltation of line, which leads to an almost caricatural construction of the figure. The human figure is deformed to achieve a lively and playful expressionism, and thus limbs are elongated to create ever-new and highly original compositions, and faces become masks reminiscent of Cubist aesthetics. A strong essentiality remains, found in the use of highly concise drawing, made of clear, black lines that also delineate the rigorously two-dimensional space. Indeed, the scenes are often set in decontextualized spaces, minimalist, almost metaphysical landscapes. As for color, we notice in Gigi Pedroli a clear tendency towards monochrome.
Gigi Pedroli is an engraver, painter, and ceramist born in Milan in 1932. He trained at the Castello Sforzesco Art School; in Milan, he taught etching courses and collaborated with several schools to stimulate children's creativity through etching.
