Description of the work
Description of the work
The scene is set near Piazza San Marco, recognizable by an architectural fragment visible on the right and the dome visible further in the distance. In the foreground, slightly to the left, is a gondolier seen from behind, wearing a red shirt. He is captured in a moment of exertion, as he brings the gondola back to the shore. Other boats appear to be moored in the background. Two female figures proceed toward the viewer: they are not characterized in detail, but only hinted at. The painting is rapid, direct, without visible corrections. The forms are simplified, the volumes barely suggested. The light is warm and diffuse, without strong contrasts, and contributes to the atmosphere of the end of the day. The architectural details are treated in a pared-down manner, as are the human figures, which remain stylized, integrated into the overall vision. The gondolier is the only clearly legible element, but he too is constructed with few strokes. The work is signed "G. Vitale," but there are currently no reliable references to precisely identify the artist. It may have been a painter active in the second half of the twentieth century, with a poetic, figurative style, close to the tradition of Italian urban views. The signature and the recurring subject of city scenes suggest a consistent production, perhaps tied to a regional context.
