Description of the work
Description of the work
The Venice that G. Vitali invites us to gaze upon is not only a splendid view of the city, but also tells the story of the pictorial genre. Landscape works are still prized today, not only for their artistic value but also for the artist's detailed view of the world. This pictorial genre developed in the 17th century, when it became an autonomous and codified genre. In the 18th century, what would be called vedutism arrived, a genre dedicated to the faithful capture of urban views and landscapes, in keeping with the Enlightenment movement, in which the objective capture of reality became a key prerequisite for painting. In the work we are admiring, the painter sought to celebrate Venice, a city much loved by landscape painters, whose pictorial conception is punctuated by numerous naturalistic details, leaving nothing to chance. The artist employs a shadowy palette, further enhanced by highly nuanced and suffused brushstrokes, giving the painting an evocative quality. The depiction of the city of Venice, with the body of water dividing the canvas, offers the painter the opportunity to create a good depth of field, emphasizing the beauty of the painting. The painter demonstrates a mastery of capturing the atmosphere of the moment, also finding, from a technical and design perspective, the grandeur of the city, which is emphasized by the barely sketched figures, proportionally smaller than the majesty of the church in the foreground—perhaps a technical device to metaphorically enhance the church in the foreground. Regarding the artistic life of the painter G. Vitali, we currently have no certain information. However, we can believe he was a leading figure in landscape painting in the mid-20th century.
