Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. In this work, the artist G. Zubian pays homage to the typical 18th-century genre scene but offers a totally contemporary pictorial interpretation.
Despite its highly traditional subject matter, the work presents an extremely contemporary language. Indeed, the representation is constructed entirely through a pronounced synthesis of objects, achieved through the application of color. The hatching, composed of dense brushstrokes, harks back to a post-Impressionist aesthetic, but the composition's abstraction is so pronounced that it completely transcends that style. Everything unfolds in a flat, two-dimensional space, where depth is suggested by the diagonal convergence of St. Mark's Square. Within this setting, the brushstrokes attempt to arrange themselves level upon level to structure the figures and buildings. This pictorial style characterizes the work with both great freshness of execution and expressiveness. The balance of colors within a vibrant palette is also highly sought after.
As we can see from the analysis of this work, the artist G. Zubian stands out for his research that takes inspiration from classical and traditional subjects, but reworks them in a synthetic and expressive pictorial language based on color.
