Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consists of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art the "Still Life" also becomes a way of interpreting reality, as it did for the Cubists or Giorgio Morandi.
Color plays a fundamental role in Gaetano Miani's pictorial language. The subject is constructed through brushstrokes, which, in this painter's work, take on an extraordinary dynamism. The entire composition, though inherently static, is moved by a continuous flow, an unstoppable movement determined precisely by the dynamics of the application of color. Thus, the subject, caught in a whirlwind of motion, appears extremely alive, shaken by existential vibrations.
Gaetano Miani was born in Troina in 1920 and passed away in 2009. He began painting in Milan in 1942. He later left Italy, becoming very popular abroad, exhibiting his works in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, New York, Washington, and Kyoto. His success is primarily linked to Brazil. In 1954, he won the competition for the murals of the Palàcio do Cafè and the decorations of the Palacio da Fazenda in São Paulo. From 1957 to 1960, he painted the frescoes of the Taubatè Cathedral and, during the same period, painted the roof of the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Campinas. In the 1970s, he opened a studio in New York.
