Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.
Gaspare Da Jaga's pictorial exploration in this work centers on pictorial matter, with both conceptual and formal relevance. Matter, which follows a circular development, can be considered for Da Jaga as a primordial biological element, a sort of living organism from which life can be generated, and consequently, composition on the canvas. In his artistic process, Gaspare Da Jaga follows this organic development of the material and, through a gestural pictorial practice, highlights its evolution, its infinite possibilities for growth, proliferation, and interaction with space. All this is always accompanied by a dynamic yet balanced color palette within the overall composition of the work.
Gaspare Da Jaga was born in Orzinuovi in 1941, the eleventh of thirteen children in the Giovannini family. Self-taught, he began painting at the age of twelve, fascinated by the French Impressionist school and its colors. His passion for the visual arts led him to travel abroad numerous times during his adolescence, but France remained his greatest artistic inspiration. He attended free drawing courses at the Brera Academy in Milan, and from 1964, he attended the art school of maestro Enea Ferrari at the Castello Sforzesco in Soncino. Numerous exhibitions of his work were held in Europe and in Brazil, where he was invited by the distinguished journalist and art critic Pietro Maria Bardi, director of the São Paulo Museum of Art. He died in 1997.
