Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their exploration focuses instead on the material or gesture with which they compose their works.

Bruna Gasparini is a painter who transfigures reality in a refined stylistic blend of Expressionism and Informalism. The landscape (still discernible from the horizon line separating sky and sea) undergoes a profound process of synthetic reduction that leads the artist to depict a minimal world, indicated by a few figures on flat, uniform layers of color in a two-dimensional space. In this way, Bruna Gasparini creates an almost surreal dimension, also characterized by intense colors with a highly symbolic and spiritual value. In this context, the artist also intervenes with a certain gestural nature that leads her to superimpose even more mysterious and hermetic pictorial signs onto this reality.
Bruna Gasparini was born in Mantua in 1913 and died in 1998 in Venice, the city where most of her painting career took place. Self-taught, she consistently achieved considerable critical and public success. She participated in three Venice Biennials, a Rome Quadrennial, as well as the Turin Prize, the Bergamo Prize, and the Mantua Prize.
