Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is an abstract composition. "Abstract" derives from the Latin term "abstrahere," which means to extract or draw out. The process of abstraction, in fact, consists of eliminating the particular and individual aspects of an object to derive a universal concept. From Kandinsky to Mondrian, from Pollock to Mirò, many painters have pushed the process of abstraction to the limit in their works, paradoxically creating pure forms and pure colors that do not exist in nature, or translating their emotions and instincts into images.
Gastone Biggi's pictorial exploration in this work centers on the chain, with both conceptual and formal relevance. For Biggi, the link in the chain can be considered a primordial biological element, a sort of cellular organism from which life can be generated and, consequently, composition on the canvas. In his artistic process, Biggi follows this organic development of the chain and, through a gestural pictorial practice, highlights its multiple directions, its infinite possibilities for growth, proliferation, and interaction with space. All this is always accompanied by an exuberant yet balanced color palette within the overall composition of the work.
Gastone Biggi was born in Rome in 1925 and passed away in Langhirano in 2014. In addition to being a painter, he was also a sculptor, musicologist, and writer. His artistic career began in 1947, but it was in 1962 that his key work, "Birth of a Point," was published. It laid out the foundation for his lifelong exploration of the sign module. This exploration took shape with the formation of Gruppo 1 that same year. Gastone Biggi held exhibitions in major cities in Italy and abroad, including Montreal, Moscow, New Delhi, Stockholm, New York, Boston, Niigata in Japan, London, Madrid, Banja Luka, and Ciudad Bolívar in Venezuela.
