Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The painter Esperia Gava, in her work, displays a certain taste for genre scenes of a popular and anecdotal nature.
The painting can be defined as a genre scene not only because of its subject matter, a folk scene, but also because of the objective and highly didactic language the painter uses. The work's approach is figurative, and Esperia Gava demonstrates her skill in achieving a perfect realistic rendering in a richly detailed representation. Nevertheless, the painter does not shy away from using a cursive style, composed of rapid strokes, to ensure greater vivacity and freshness in her execution. Thus, the brushstrokes display a certain level of synthesis, without ever compromising the clarity of the anecdotal and realistic narrative, but just enough to infuse the scene with a delicate lyricism.
Esperia Gava (1916), an Italian painter of the early 20th century, began painting in 1931 under the guidance of master Dall'Oca. In 1937 she was forced to move to Toulon (France), where she continued to paint, participating in various painting competitions with excellent results. In 1945 she moved to Rome, continuing her artistic training under the guidance of master sculptor Turillo Sindoni. Shy of publicity and devoted to her family, she continued to work for several years, producing very few, highly demanding works, mostly intended for a small circle of acquaintances. Her works appear in private collections in Italy and abroad.
