Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconographic subject of the Madonna and Child has been depicted throughout the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Traditionally, this theme was often depicted with Mary holding the baby Jesus on her lap. These images were associated with a sense of protection, compassion, and divine motherhood, offering a focal point for prayer and veneration. Important masters such as Giotto, Cimabue, and later Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and Michelangelo offered their own interpretations. In this case, the contemporary artist Picinni seeks to offer his own interpretation, using the bas-relief technique, a sculptural technique that involves carving figures or designs onto a flat surface so that the sculpted figures are relatively low in relief compared to the base. The very technique Picinni used on the oval helps us understand the importance of devotional style for the artist. The great dexterity and gestures we rediscover in the artist's sacred works undoubtedly hark back to a style that celebrates the figure of the Virgin, with a sense of horror vacui pervading the work. The oval is presented in a two-tone palette, with the blue background forming the foundation for the silver relief, further enhancing the figure of the Virgin. Nicknamed the "Flemish of Puglia," Gennaro Picinni was born in Bari in 1933. His artistic career began in 1950 with an abstract style, but he soon abandoned this approach when he joined the "Naviglio painters" in Milan, along with Crippa, Fontana, Giani, Peverelli, Scanavino, and Sottsass. His religious works feature a graphic approach using pure colors, a Flemish influence from which he owes his nickname. Many of his works can be found in the Vatican Museums, exhibited in the modern art section of the Borgia Apartment.
