Description of the work
Description of the work
The Last Supper has been one of the most popular subjects since the dawn of Western sacred art. The episode, narrated in all the Gospels, is of fundamental importance to the Christian religion, as it represents the institution of the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Especially starting in the 13th century, artistic representations of the Last Supper have established certain customs that have endured over the centuries. Typically, the figures are depicted frontally, behind the table on which the bread and wine are laid out. Christ is centrally positioned, blessing the food, while the twelve apostles are positioned on the sides. Judas is usually depicted standing aside, while Saint John, the beloved apostle, leans on Christ's shoulder.
The artist who created this sculpture demonstrates his fine ceramics skills. Indeed, he possesses excellent technical skill, as can be seen in the perfection of the naturalistic rendering of the figures, the reproduction of every detail, and the exaltation of color. The figures are beautifully enhanced, in a balanced rhythm of mass and volume. Formally, the artist demonstrates a classical conception of sculptural art, attentive to the reproduction of the subject and the harmonious unity of the work.
Gennaro Simeone, the artist who created this work, is a master ceramist, continuing the Neapolitan tradition of Capodimonte. He possesses a remarkable technique, rooted in a classical and traditional conception of artistic creation. As we can see in this work, the sculptor pursues a completely naturalistic rendering and a harmonious unity throughout the composition.
