Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as an independent subject began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers were depicted not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also became a way of interpreting reality.
Franco Gentilini's style is the fruit of personal research that has led to the creation of his own world with surreal, fairy-tale overtones. In developing his works, Franco Gentilini draws inspiration from a fanciful Middle Ages in which subjects are the product of colorful synthesis. Formally, this research is based on a highly refined graphic elegance that perfectly complements the artist's boundless imagination, as we can fully appreciate in this "Vase of Flowers." Here, Gentilini's approach consists in subverting the laws of space, placing all the elements of the composition flat on the work's two-dimensional surface.
Franco Gentilini was born in Faenza in 1909 and passed away in Rome in 1981. He studied his city's ceramic tradition and later completed his artistic training in Bologna. In 1929, he moved to Rome, where he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts. His art, fairytale-like, dreamlike, ironic, and colorful, was expressed not only in painting, but also in graphic design, set design, and book illustration.
